Journalist, Activist, and Historian

Valcin’s engaged approach occasioned impassioned conversations that called into question many things that concerned the Haitian people: its culture, its myths, its problems, its fears, its revolts, and its history.

Valcin’s approach was socially motivated. He expressed through his painting the entire context of what he wanted to have reconsidered and an order of ideas moving towards the future, towards action, towards dynamism. Aided by a steady technique, by means of a figurative image from which the audience could not escape, by the anecdote, he imposed with firm authority the message that he wanted to express. Each spectator was called upon to feel implicated, and Valcin is one of the rare Haitian painters of his generation who dared to approach this trend directly.
